하나님의 특별하신 은혜와 섭리 속에 지금까지 약25년간 미국에서 한인교회를 사역하고 있습니다. 제가 두 문화 속에서 실제적으로 갈등하고 경험한 목회의 내용들을 이 책에 담았다고 표현할 수 있겠습니다. 그리고 향후 20년간은 이러한 목회의 참고서들이 개발되어 영어권에 속한 이민교회에서 사역하시는 교역자들과 해외의 선교현장에서 수고하시는 한인 선교사들 그리고 21세기에 목회를 꿈꾸는 신학생들에게 조금이라도 도움이 되었으면 하는 뜻에서 조심스럽게 이 책을 펴내게 되었습니다.
I have been in the ministry for twenty years by God's special grace and provision. I have been serving the Korean Church for the last twenty five years in the United States. In this book, I have treated the practical contents of the struggles and the experiences I have faced with the two cultures in my ministry. I am writing this book with the hope that my cumulative pastoral experiences may assist you today, and be used as a resource and a reference book for the next twenty years. I have decided to publish this book with the sincere desire to provide assistance to those Korean ministers who are ministering in English speaking congregations, Korean missionaries who are working hard in the international mission fields, and Seminary students who are planning to minister in the twenty-first century in a bi-cultural setting

여러분들은 금년에 어떤 선물은 기다기로 계십니까? 또한 여러분들은 어떤 선물을 준비하셨습니까? 크리스마스는 하나님께서 우리를 사랑하시므로 우리에게 어떤 선물을 주시기 보다 외아들 예수 그리스도를 대속의 선물로 주신 것입니다. 요한 복음 1:14에 보면 "말씀이 육신이 되어 우리 가운데 거하시매 우리가 그 영광을 보니 아버지의 독생자 영광이요 은혜와 진리가 충만하더라"고 기록되어 있습니다. 여기서 은혜란 말은 값없이 주시는 선물이란 의미입니다.
What kind of gifts have you been waiting to receive this year? Aiso, what kind of gifts have you been preparing to give? Since God loves us so much, at Christnas, He gave His one and only son, Jesus Christ as the gift of redemption instead of giving us any other presents. thus, in John 1:14 is written. "the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full og grace and truth." The word grace in the verse implies we didn't pay for the gift
오늘 본문에 보면 "천사가 이르되 무서워 말라. 보라 내가 온 백성에게 미칠 큰 기쁨의 좋은 소기을 너희에게 전하노라. 오늘날 다윗의 동네에 너희를 위하여 구주가 나셨으니 곧 그리스도 주시니라." 했는데, "기쁨의 좋은 소식"이란 바로 "복음"입니다. 인류를 위한 기쁜 소식은 주 예수 그리스도가 인류에게 가장 좋은 선물로 오셨다는 말입니다.
As we read in today's Scripture, "But the angel said to them, 'Do not be afriaid. I bring yoo good news og great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you : he is Christ the Lord." "Good news of great joy" is Good News. The good news of great joy for humanity means Jesus Christ came to this world as the greatest gift to humanity.
가장 좋은 선물은 낡거나 해지지 않습니다. 주님을 믿는 우리에게 하나님께서 주신 가장 좋은 선물은, 어제나 오늘이나 영원토록 동일하신 예수 그리스도이십니다. 풀은 마르고 꽃은 시들지만 하나님의 말씀은 영원히 변치 않는 가장 좋은 선물입니다.
The finest gift does not get old or worn out. The best present God gave us is Jesus Christ who is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Although grass wihers and flowers fade away, God's word never changes. Therefore, it is the best gift we have received.
예수 그리스도는 갈릴리 호숫가에서 제자들에게 진리를 가르치시고 병자를 고치셨습니다. 예수 그리스도 사도시대에 성령을 통하여 많은 기적을 일으키시면서 교회를 이룩하셨습니다. 그리고 이 천년 전이나 지금도 동일하고 역사 하시고 참 좋은 선물을 주시는 까닭에 전 인류가 예수 그리스도의 탄생을 축하하게 되는 것입니다.
Jesus Christ taught the truth ti his disiciples and healed many sick people at Galilee. Jesus established the church with many miracles through the holy Spirit in the era of Apostles. Jesus has been sovereign the same way for the past two thousnad years God has given such a nice present to us. Because of this, humanity celebrates the birth of Jesus Chrisit.
세상에 수많은 사람들이 흥분하여 크리스마스를 기다리지만 예수님의 탄생의 의미를 아는 사람들은 정작 별로 없습니다. 그리고 가장 좋은 선물이 내 마음 가운데 계시다는 것을 모르는 사람처럼 불쌍한 사람이 없고, 가난한 사람은 없습니다. 좋으신 예수 그리스도가 이 땅 위에 탄생하신 이유는 우리뿐만 아니라 후손에게도 이 선물은 나누워 주시기를 원하는 것입니다.
Although so many people wiat for Christmas with excitement, there are only a few who know the maening of the birth of Jesus.. There is no one who is more miserable and poor than the person who does not know that the most wonderful gift is in one's heart. Jesus wants to give this gift not only to us but also to our descendants because Jesus Christ was born in this world.
크리스마스 이야기는 언제 들어도 새롭고 기쁜 소식이 되는 것입니다. 인간다운 삶을 살지 못하고 죄에 물들어 어두움 속에 방황하는 우리들에게 예수님께서 오셔서 우리로 하여금 온전한 인간이 되게 하시고 하나님의 형상을 입게 하셨을 뿐만 아니라 어제나 오늘이나 동일하신 까닭입니다.
The story of Christmas is always new and fresh and good news with great joy because Jesus came to us who were tainted with sins and living in darkness. Jesus made us flawless in his eyes and put us in the image of God. He is the same yesterday and today.
오늘 예수 그리스도는 여러분에게 희망이 되셨습니다. 사랑이 없는 가정에 사랑을 주셨고, 무엇을 믿고 살아야 할 바를 모르고 방황하던 우리들에게 참 신앙을 되셔서 우리에게 오신 것입니다.
Jesus Christ became the hope for us He gave love to the loveless famliy, and he came us as true faith when we were wandering not knowing what we live for.
우리 구세주 예수 그리스도가 우리 가운데 탄생하심으로 말미암아 우리들 마음속에 인간을 존중히 여길 줄 아는 마음을 갖게 되는 것입니다. 또한 우리가 거듭나기 전에는 인간 자체만으로 우리에게 소망을 가져다 줄 수가 없습니다.
We can have the heart to present people due to our Savior, Jesus Christ, who was born in the midst of us. Also, Unless we are born again, we humans can not bring hope to purselves.
가장 좋은 선물은 항상 어디서나 우리와 함께 하십니다. 흔이 우리가 주고받는 선물은 다 필요한 것은 아닙니다. 북한에서 자유를 찾아 남으로 넘어 오는 사람들이 많이 있습니다. 그들은 모든 것을 버리고 순전히 자유만을 위하여 죽음을 각오하고 탈출한 것입ㄴ디ㅏ. 자유가 무엇입니까? 진정한 평화를 의미하는 것입니다. 마찬가지로 그리스도를 믿는 우리들은 세상의 온갖 것들은 없어도 괜찮습니다. 왜냐하면 언제나 어느곳에서나 임마누엘의 하나님이 우리와 함께 하시기 때문입니다.
The finest gift is always with us everywhere. Usually, the gifts we receive and give are not necessarliy indispensable. There were people from North Korea who came over South korea to seek freedom. They gave up rverything that they had and escaped to freedm risking their lives. What is freedom? It means true peace. Also, we believe in Christ are quite content without having many things of the world because whenever and wherever we are, God of Immanuel is always with us.
우리가 기도할 때 응답해 주시고, 고독하고 외로워서 무엇을 의지하고 살아야 할지 알 수 없어 방황할 때 우리들에게도 가까이 오셔서 "두려워 말라 내가 너와 함께 하리라 놀라지 말라 나는 네 하나님이 됨이라" 하시는 임마누엘의 하나님이시기 때문에, 우리와 함께 계시는 주님이 까닭에 가장 좋은 선물이 되시는 것입니다.
God answers when we pray anf when we are lonely and windering about what we have to rely on in our lives. God comes neras us and say, "Do nt fear. I am with you. Do not fear I am your God." Since God is the god of Immanuel and God is always with us, God is the greatest gift to us.
여러분들이 육신의 병이 들었을 때에 치유의 능력으로 같이 계시는 예수님, 실패와 좌절 가운데 있을 때 우리에게 용기를 주시는 예수님, 근심과 두려움에 싸여 있을 때에 우리 옆에 계시는 예수님, 바로 그분이 우리 마음가운데 탄생하신 까닭에 하나님 앞에 감사하는 기쁜 예배를 드리게 되는 줄로 압니다. 우리가 혼자 몸부림치며 고민하고 방황할 때에도 예수님은 우리의 어깨를 두드리시며 "내가 너와 함께 하리라"고 하십니다. 가장 좋은 선물은 어느 때, 어디서나 함께 계시는 임마누엘의 하나님이십니다.
Jesus who has healing power is with us when we are sick. Jesus gives courage and strength in the midst of failure and despair. Jesus is reiht beside us when we are wrapped with anxiety and fear. We are able to worship with born in the thanksgiving in our hearts because Jesus was born in the center of our hearts. Even when we struggle and have a heart full of anguish, Jesus pats our shoulder saying, "I am always with you". The finest gift is God of Immanuel who is with us whenever and wherever we are.
가장 좋은 선물은 다른 사람과 함께 나누어야 하는 것입ㄴ다. 가장 좋은 선물은 나 혼자만이 소유하기에는 너무 아까운 것입니다. 진정한 크리스천은 다른 사람들과 나누고 싶은 마음이 동하기 마련입니다. 목자가 밤중에 양을 치다가 천사의 찬송소리를 들었습니다. "지극히 높은 곳에서는 하나님께 영광이요, 땅에서는 기뻐하심을 입은 사람들에게는 평화로다." 이 기쁜 소식을 들었을 때에 양떼를 치던 목자들은 베들레헴으로 달려가서 요셉에게 이 기쁜 소식을 전했다고 했습니다.
The best present can be shared with others. The finest gift is too precious to be kept to yourself. It is natural for a true Christian to have a heart to share this gift with other people. The shepherds heard the praise of angels while they were tending their flocks. "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rest." After the shepherd heard this joyful news, they ran to Bethlehem to give the news to Joseph.
동방박사들이 별을 보고 찾아 나서 아기 예수님 앞에 예물을 드린 것처럼 가장 귀한 선물은 혼자만이 가질 수 없습니다. 혼자만이 가지고 있는 사람은 불행한 사람입니다. 가장 귀한 산물로 오신 예수 그리스도를 다른 사람들과 나누어야 합니다. 왜냐하면 복된 소식과 기쁜 소식이 되기 때문입니다.
As the magi follwed the star with treasures to see the baby Jesus, an individual can not keep the most precious present to him/herself. The preson who keeps the best presentis an unhappy preson. We have to share Jesus Christ who came as the best gift with others because Jesus is the blessed news and the good news with great joy.
어디서든지 우리와 함께 하시는 임마누엘 선물을 남에게 전달함으로써 그 성탄의 축복이 성도 여러분들과 함께 하시기를 축원합니다.
I pray that you will give the precious gift of Immanuel, who is always with us, so that the blessing of Chrisitmas will be with you always.
